Travel Vaccine CPA/CDTA Services - FAQs

Overview

Outcomes will be removing travel vaccines from future updates and renewals of our Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA) and Collaborative Drug Therapy Agreement (CDTA) programs.

This change is intended to help maintain a sustainable, cost-effective CPA/CDTA program while continuing to support the immunization needs of the vast majority of participating pharmacies.

Travel vaccines will remain authorized under your existing CPA/CDTA until the agreement is updated or renewed.

What is changing for pharmacies participating in an Outcomes CPA/CDTA?

Travel vaccines will be removed from future updates and renewals of Outcomes-sponsored CPAs and CDTAs. Existing agreements will continue to authorize travel vaccines until the agreement is renewed or updated.

When does this change take effect?

This change is not effective immediately. Travel vaccines will remain included under your current Outcomes CPA/CDTA until your next agreement update or renewal.

Renewal and update schedules vary by state. To estimate when your pharmacy may be affected, refer to the effective date or signature date of your current CPA/CDTA document. In most cases, agreements are updated or renewed approximately one year after their effective date.

Why is Outcomes making this change?

Outcomes was notified of a more than 40% increase in the costs required to support travel vaccines through our physician network prompting us to review cost and utilization associated with travel vaccines under our CPA/CDTA program.

Travel vaccines represented less than 0.2% of reported vaccinations from our pharmacy network. To avoid increasing overall CPA/CDTA program costs for participating pharmacies while continuing to support commonly administered vaccines, Outcomes has decided to remove travel vaccines from future CPA/CDTA updates and renewals.

Which vaccines are considered travel vaccines?

The specific vaccines included may vary based on the applicable state CPA/CDTA language. Examples of travel vaccines affected by this change include:

    • Anthrax
    • Cholera
    • Japanese Encephalitis
    • Rabies (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
    • Tick-Borne Encephalitis
    • Typhoid Fever
    • Yellow Fever

Will this affect routine immunizations?

No. This change only applies to travel vaccines. Routine immunizations supported under your CPA/CDTA are not impacted by this change.

Will I need to sign a new CPA/CDTA immediately?

No. Your current agreement remains in effect until its scheduled update or renewal.

How will I know when my CPA/CDTA is being renewed or updated?

Outcomes will continue to communicate with participating pharmacies through the existing renewal and update process.

Can I continue administering travel vaccines after my CPA/CDTA is updated?

Travel vaccines will no longer be authorized under future versions of the Outcomes-sponsored CPA/CDTA. Pharmacies that wish to continue administering travel vaccines should evaluate other authorization options available under applicable state laws and regulations.

Can Outcomes help me obtain an alternative travel vaccine authorization arrangement?

Outcomes does not currently offer a separate travel vaccine-specific CPA program. Pharmacies interested in continuing travel vaccine services should consult their legal or regulatory options available within their state.

Should I make changes to my travel vaccine inventory?

Inventory decisions remain the responsibility of each pharmacy. Pharmacies that currently administer travel vaccines may wish to consider this upcoming change as part of future inventory and operational planning.

Does this impact vaccine billing or reimbursement?

No. This change only affects authorization of travel vaccines under the Outcomes-sponsored CPA/CDTA. Coverage and reimbursement requirements remain subject to payer policies and applicable regulations.

What routine immunizations will continue to be supported under Outcomes-sponsored CPAs/CDTAs?

Routine immunizations are vaccines that are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as part of standard preventive healthcare for children, adolescents, and adults.

While vaccine authority varies by state and specific CPA/CDTA language, Outcomes-sponsored agreements generally continue to support commonly recommended routine immunizations, including vaccines such as:

  • COVID-19
  • Influenza (Flu)
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Pneumococcal (Pneumonia)
  • Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap/Td)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Meningococcal Vaccines
